Venetian Dream

 

Our Spring 2019 campaign is set in Venice, where we imagined the journey of an intrepid woman exploring the floating city.

Creative Director Emily Smith’s muse for the season was the iconoclast and art patron, Peggy Guggenheim, who called Venice “a living work of art” and made the city her adopted home. Emily Smith channeled her spirit, crafting a collection brimming with feminine shapes rendered with a European sensibility, statement pieces with sculptural allure, and an architect’s exacting construction. Designs for the modern woman, made for the journey, and the destination.

Designs for the
Modern Woman

Shapes are drawn from Peggy Guggenheim’s heyday in Venice in the ‘50s and ‘60s, including waist-defining dresses, collared shirts and capris, all reworked with a modern eye. “I was drawn to Peggy’s spirit,” says Emily Smith. She was strong and fearless and she answered to no one—and to me that’s the Lafayette 148 woman.”

Spring’s understated, Italian-influenced glamour is captured in elegant, pared-down designs. “There’s a European air to the collection,” says Emily Smith. “We’re a New York brand, but we’re rooted in European techniques and European fabrics, so this collection celebrates that part of our heritage.”

Meet the Artists

The campaign was shot on the Venetian Island of Giudecca, where a 15th century convent turned artists’ studios served as the backdrop. The artists’ workshops we visited—the mask maker, Leonardo; the Collagists, Aura and Luigi; the paper sculptor, Fernando; and the painter and printer, Monica— were the perfect setting to bring our Venetian Dream to life.
