A Color Story

With the arrival of Pre-Spring, Creative Director Emily Smith envisioned a collection flush with vibrant prints, artful pairings and a colorful, modern twist on career dressing made to seamlessly weather the shift in seasons.

For inspiration, she drew on the work of French painter and textile designer Sonia Delaunay, a key figure in the Avant-Garde art movement, whose rhythmic, geometric prints and novel use of color became the starting point for Pre-Spring.

“Sonia Delaunay was a master of color. She really understood how colors influence each other to tell different stories in such a beautiful way. We tried to capture that spirit in our prints and embellishments and even the styling, through mixed textures and color blocking.”

Inspired by Art

Accomplished at everything from painting and textiles to furniture, quilting and fashion design, Sonia Delaunay took an artist’s lens to all of her endeavors. Her graphic technique, called “Orphism,” took Paris by storm after the turn of the twentieth century, and in 1964 earned her the first retrospective by a living female artist at the Louvre. “To Sonia there was no hierarchy between these different fields she worked in—a quilt or a dress was just as much ‘art’ as a painting,” says Creative Director Emily Smith. “That really speaks to me as a designer, because to us, fashion is art.”

Color + Composition

Colorblocking is a key part of Creative Director Emily Smith’s vision of the modern woman’s working wardrobe. A mix of rich tones and novel textures, including printed silk, razor pleats, croc-embossed lambskin and Finesse Crepe, combine in looks that are vivid but sophisticated, powerful but feminine. Elegant, layered and crafted with an eye on ease, the collection is the perfect respite from winter—and a perfect welcome for warmer days ahead.
